What Is A Chip Rate?

Getting the right feeds and speeds for your CNC router is crucial to running your machine at optimum efficiency. Before you set up a file for cutting, there are a number of parameters that you need to consider in order to achieve the accuracy and finish you desire. Chipload is one of the most important factors in the equation.

  • Chipload refers to the thickness of the chip that is cut out with each cutting edge per revolution.
  • The next piece of information you need to know is the spindle speed. Typically, the speed range of a CNC router spindle is between about 7,000rpm and 18,000rpm.
  • Feedrate is the other factor you need in order to calculate the feed and speed. This refers to the surface speed of the cutting tool in inches per minute. Most CNC routers’ feed rate is 200ipm.

If you are having difficulty calculating the speeds and feeds for your CNC router, a simple way to work out the information that you need is to use a free online calculator.

How to Fine Tune your CNC Router

When you’re using your speed and feed information, it’s better to begin at the lowest end of the recommended feedrate and increase it until:

  • the finish deteriorates because of vibration of the cutting tool
  • tight radii causes the machine to adjust to a slower speed
  • the part moves

Once you have determined the maximum speed, decrease the spindle speed until the finish deteriorates. Then increase it incrementally until you achieve an acceptable edge finish.
