Saving Money With A CNC Router

Saving Money CNC RouterIf you are in the manufacturing business, buying a CNC router can save you money and increase your production. Before buying a CNC Router, it’s important that you do your homework. Once you understand the most common terms related to this device, you will understand how they can work for you.

  • Motors: The servo, stepper, closed loop stepper drives provide the motion. The motors come in many sizes and are designated as a NEMA XX size. NEMA 23 and 34.
  • Torque: The motor torque is rated in ounce-inches, like foot pounds on car engines, only smaller units for smaller motors. The higher the “oz in,” the more power the motor has. Rack and pinion, ballscrew, gearbox, belt drive all convert rotary motion into linear motion.
  • Software: This provides the motion control. There are “branded” proprietary versions that are made to operate specific makes of machine. Other software solutions can operate multiple brands. Some require a hardware purchase, while others do not. Some run industry standard G-code. Some software is easier to use than others. A good software solution is stable and does not create problems for users, whether you are a CNC router novice or a veteran.

As you look at online brochures or talk to a company’s sales person, it’s important to pay attention to catchphrases and buzzwords. Anytime a successful marketing campaign from one manufacturer uses a buzzword, their competitors will try to find a way to include that word or phrase in their respective advertising.

Pay attention to what salespeople don’t say.  Some sellers use outright sleight of hand by moving you in one direction so that you won’t look in another.

Finally, read the fine print and determine exactly what you’ll be paying for. Watch out for specs that are published for one model and not another. Find out what is not included with a product and what it will cost to add it.

If you are setting up a small, at-home wood shop, a CNC router is a great addition to your toolkit. They have many advantages, including:

  • You can use your CNC router as often as you would like, even all day, every day.
  • You can program your machine with a single design and use it to make hundreds, even thousands of the product, and each one will be exactly the same.
  • Unlike when using manual lathes and milling machines, you do not need to be a skilled engineer to use a CNC machine.
  • You can easily update a CNC router by upgrading the software that drives it.
  • There is plenty of user-friendly virtual software available so you can train how to use a CNC router.
  • Because you can use advanced design software to program your CNC machine, you have the potential to make a product that you could not make using manual machines.

Getting the Best CNC Router for Your Money

How much you spend on a CNC router will depend on the size of machine you require, the model you choose and the features it has installed. Each CNC machine has its range of capabilities. Here is a rundown of the four categories of CNC router and their general price ranges.

CNCs For The Hobbyist

Hobby CNC routers are priced around $600-$4000. They range in size from 3’ x 6’ and 12’ x 12’.  As well as hobbies, these machines can be used for small home businesses. They are available in the form of a kit or prebuilt. This type of machine has no extra features installed.

Low-Range CNCs

This model has a price range of between $4000-$20,000. The routers are sized up to 4′ x 8′. Low-range models operate on 3 axes and are designed for light duty work. The wide variance in price depends on the type of spindle the router has. The router spindle options are standard or industrial. Low-range machines usually have a dust collection system installed. They are driven by a stepper motor or basic servo system.

Mid-Range CNCs

Similar to low-range models but with a heavier construction, mid-range models cost around $20,000-$60,000.  The frame is usually made of reinforced steel. The servo system has three axes. A CNC controller is included. Extra features include an automatic tool changer.

High-End CNCs

fotolia_54343017_xsThis type of CNC router will cost you between $60,000-$100,000 and is designed for industrial use. They feature the best components, such as stand-alone vacuum systems and automatic tool change spindles. They include a controller and computer module. When you purchase a high-end CNC router, the company will usually provide optional training services.

Tips for Starting Your First CNC Router Project

Once you have a CNC machine, and you know how to use it correctly, you will soon be able to craft beautiful pieces relatively quickly. Before you get started, you need to know the necessary steps to CNC routing. Here are some tips to help you.

  • Design Your Piecewoodchip1

You have an idea of what you’re going to make. You probably have a few sketches and designs. Now it’s time to design the part in your CAD software. As a beginner, this will help you realize what you need to change in order to make the piece easy to manufacture.

  • Modify Your Design

Now it’s time to modify your design so that you can manufacture your part easily and cost effectively.

  • Get Programming

Once you have your modified CAD model, you are ready to create your G-code program.

  • CNC Set Upwoodchips5

Before you start making your piece, it’s important to make sure that your machine is all set up and ready to run. Check that you have all the right tools in the changer and the correct g-code program is loaded.

  • Machining

You’re all set to go. Now it’s time to machine the piece.

  • Quality Check

Check your piece to make sure it meets your intended specifications.

  • Finish It Upwoodchips4

This part is optional, as your piece may not need any finishing.

3 Advantages of Running a Variable Speed CNC Router At Lower Speeds

Nowadays most high-quality CNC routers have a variable speed control.

There are three main advantages of running your variable speed router at slower speeds. These are:

  1. Bit Wear

If you’re running your CNC at slower speeds that means that your bit is making fewer cuts. A feed rate of 14,000 RPM will make just a good a cut as a feed rate of 18,000 RPM, but the advantage is that because you are making fewer cuts, your bit will stay sharper and cut as well for twice as long.

  1. Less Sanding

Although there are some jobs for which you’ll need to run your router at faster speeds, like cutting dovetails, when you are running at slower speeds, especially on corners, you will reduce the risk of your wood charring. This, in turn, means fewer hours of sanding for you.

  1. Quieter Routing

Slower Router SpeedsAt a slower speed, your router can perform at as much as 20 decibels quieter than at top speed. You’ll still need to wear ear protection, but it will be more pleasant for your co-workers and neighbors.
